Gogol Bordello is a band from New York who plays zigenarpunk. Several members are Eastern European immigrants. The band was formed in 1999 and released their first single in 1999. Since then, four full-length albums and an EP come out. In 2005, they were signed to punk label Side one Dummy Records. The singer is Ukrainian-born Eugene Hütz also known as DjHütz around among New York's Eastern European clubs. Hütz has also played the role of translator in the film Everything is Illuminated. Gogol in the band's name comes from the famous Russian-Ukrainian writer Nikolai Gogol. The band has stated that as Nikolai Gogol brought in Ukrainian culture in the Russian literature they plan to bring their style of music in the Western world. Gogol Bordello are infamous for their live performances, where basically anything can happen.
